The Chart of Accounts is one of the most important components to address during an ERP implementation. A new system often requires structural changes, but it also presents an opportunity to resolve long-standing issues related to reporting, data consistency, and overall financial data management.
What is less clear is when this work should happen and how much effort it actually requires.
In many ERP projects, finance teams are provided with a recommended account structure and a crosswalk. However, the work extends far beyond mapping. It requires decisions about reporting outputs and drill downs, alignment across connected systems, and consideration of PSAB and provincial reporting requirements. For most municipalities, this represents a significant body of work. When it is not planned for, it often results in project delays, rework, and added cost.
